What a QBO file is
A QBO (.qbo) is the file QuickBooks Desktop imports via Web Connect. Under the hood it's OFX plus Intuit's INTU.BID bank identifier.
Each transaction carries a date, signed amount, type and a stable unique id so re-imports don't duplicate.
Why convert a statement to QBO
To bring historical or off-feed transactions into QuickBooks Desktop as bank-feed-style entries you reconcile normally.
When your bank's own QBO download isn't available for the period you need.
How to import it into QuickBooks
After converting (sign in free to export accounting formats):
- Drop your statement PDF into the converter above and sign in free.
- Download the QBO file.
- In QuickBooks Desktop: File → Utilities → Import → Web Connect Files.
- Select the .qbo and pick the account to import into.
QBO honesty: OFX is the reliable import
QuickBooks validates the QBO's INTU.BID against its directory of participating banks. Because Export Bank Statement isn't a registered financial institution, the file uses a placeholder id — so QuickBooks Desktop may reject it with an OL-301 ("not a participating financial institution") error until you edit the bank id to your own bank's value. We do not impersonate a real bank's id. For a one-click import that just works, use OFX instead — it carries no bank id and imports into QuickBooks, Quicken, Xero and Sage. We never imply a guaranteed QBO import.
Checked before you download
Every conversion runs a reconciliation check — it ties the extracted transactions back to the statement's running balance, so credits and debits add up to the closing figure the bank printed. A statement that doesn't reconcile is flagged, not quietly exported — so your QBO file is correct before it reaches your books.
Frequently asked questions
Why might QuickBooks reject the QBO file?expand_more
The embedded bank id (INTU.BID) isn't one QuickBooks recognises (an OL-301 error). Set your bank's id, or use OFX, which has no bank id.
What's the difference between QBO and OFX?expand_more
A QBO is OFX plus Intuit's bank tags. OFX is the more universally importable of the two — prefer it unless you specifically need Web Connect.
Is it free?expand_more
Converting is free to start; exporting QBO/OFX needs a free sign-in.
