Upload an HDFC Bank statement PDF and every transaction comes back as clean rows — date, narration, reference, withdrawal, deposit and closing balance — checked so the closing figure ties out. Export to Excel, CSV, or a Tally-ready XML for your accountant.

HDFC is India's largest private bank, and if you use UPI at all, an HDFC statement is mostly one thing: a wall of narration. Every UPI, NEFT and IMPS payment writes a long string into the narration column, and that density is exactly what a plain copy-paste turns into an unreadable mess.

What an HDFC statement looks like

An HDFC account statement uses these columns:

Column

What's in it

Date

The transaction date

Narration

The full payment detail and reference string

Chq/Ref No

The cheque or reference number

Value Dt

The date the entry affected the balance

Withdrawal Amt

Money out

Deposit Amt

Money in

Closing Balance

Running balance after the transaction

The Narration column is where the work is. A single UPI line reads like `UPI-<name>-<UPI ID>-<bank>-<reference>`, and NEFT and IMPS lines carry their own reference and counterparty. That string is long, it wraps across lines, and it's exactly what you need to identify a payment — so losing it defeats the point. The converter keeps the whole narration on one row, with the reference number and value date beside it, so a month of UPI activity comes out as clean, searchable rows rather than a jumble.

Where to download your HDFC statement

  1. HDFC NetBanking: log in at netbanking.hdfcbank.com, go to Accounts → Statement, choose the account and period, and download the PDF.
  2. HDFC Bank app: open the account, select Statement, pick the period and save or email the PDF.

An HDFC e-statement PDF is password-protected — it opens with the password HDFC sets (the details are shown on the download page). Once it's open the text is selectable and the conversion is exact. A scanned passbook or printout works too, through OCR.

Getting the numbers where you need them

  • Excel or Google Sheets — a clean `.xlsx` or CSV, one row per transaction, ready to total, filter and pivot.
  • Tally — a Tally-ready XML so the entries import as vouchers rather than being keyed in by hand.
  • Zoho Books, QuickBooks and others — the same data in each one's format.

Before download, the maths is checked: opening balance, plus deposits, minus withdrawals, has to reach the closing balance. Across a statement heavy with UPI lines, that check is what catches a single entry dropped between pages.

Built for UPI-heavy months

A busy HDFC current account can run to hundreds of UPI entries in a single month — each a customer, a supplier or a refund. Read on a PDF, that volume is a blur; as rows in a spreadsheet, it's something you can actually work with. Filter to a date range, total the deposits against your sales, pull out the entries that need a GST invoice, or pass a clean Tally file to your accountant. For a shop or an online seller collecting payments over UPI all day, that shift from document to data is the whole job.

Common snags with HDFC statements

  • Long UPI and NEFT narrations wrap. The full string is kept on one row instead of being split.
  • Value date vs transaction date. Both dates are preserved so reconciliation is accurate.
  • Password-protected PDF. Open it with the HDFC password first, then convert the opened file.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert an HDFC statement to Excel for free?keyboard_arrow_down

Yes. Upload the PDF and get a clean Excel or CSV back free to start, with the closing balance checked so it reconciles.

Can I import an HDFC statement into Tally?keyboard_arrow_down

Yes. The converter produces a Tally-ready XML, so hundreds of UPI and NEFT lines land as vouchers your accountant can post directly, instead of being typed in one by one.

My HDFC PDF is password-protected — will it still convert?keyboard_arrow_down

Yes, once you open it. Enter the password HDFC shows on the download page, and the converter then reads the unlocked narration, references and amounts.

What do the UPI, NEFT and RTGS narrations mean?keyboard_arrow_down

They mark the payment rail: UPI for app-based payments, NEFT and IMPS for bank transfers, and RTGS for high-value ones — each writing its own reference into the narration. The converter keeps that whole string with the transaction it describes.
