Upload a Starling statement PDF and every transaction comes back as clean rows — date, counterparty, money in, money out and the running balance — checked so the closing figure ties out. Export to Excel, CSV, or an import file for Xero, QuickBooks, Zoho or FreeAgent.

Starling is a full bank built around its app, and a lot of its customers are sole traders and small limited companies who bank there because of the business account. That's exactly the group who needs statement data as rows in a spreadsheet, not locked inside a PDF.

Finding your statement in the Starling app

Starling lets you pull a statement from either the app or web banking:

  1. Open the Starling app, tap the account, and go to Statements.
  2. Choose the month or a custom date range and export the PDF. Starling can also generate a CSV here.
  3. On a computer, the same statements are available through Starling's online banking.
  4. Business account holders find statements the same way under the business account.

Because Starling generates the PDF itself, the text is clean and the conversion is exact. If you've been forwarded a scan or a screenshot instead, the converter reads that with OCR.

What's on a Starling statement

A Starling statement lists each transaction with a date, the counterparty, the amount and a running balance. A few Starling-specific details are worth knowing:

  • Spaces. Money you've moved into a Space — Starling's savings pots — shows as a transfer. Each transfer stays on the correct side so your day-to-day spending total isn't thrown off by savings you set aside.
  • Categories. Starling tags transactions (and business users can set their own categories), which can carry through to the export and speed up sorting business costs from personal ones.
  • Reference and payment type. Faster Payments, Direct Debits, card payments and standing orders are all labelled, so once it's in a spreadsheet you can filter by how the money moved.

Getting it into your spreadsheet or books

  • Excel or Google Sheets — one row per transaction with real numbers, ready to total, filter or pivot.
  • Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent — an import-ready file so the lines land as bank entries to reconcile.
  • Zoho and others — the same clean data in each one's format.

Every figure is reconciled before download: opening balance, plus money in, minus money out, has to equal the closing balance. For a Starling business account being handed to an accountant, that check means the month adds up rather than nearly adding up.

Common snags with Starling statements

  • Spaces read as spending. Transfers to and from Spaces stay separate so they don't inflate your expenses.
  • CSV vs PDF. Starling can give you a CSV directly, but if all you have is the PDF — one a client or accountant sent over — the converter turns it into the same clean rows.
  • Business and personal. Starling personal and business accounts use the same statement layout, so the same conversion works for both.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a Starling statement to Excel for free?keyboard_arrow_down

Yes. Upload the PDF and get a clean Excel or CSV back free to start, with the running balance checked so it reconciles.

Where do I get my Starling statement?keyboard_arrow_down

In the Starling app: tap the account, open Statements, pick the period and export the PDF (or CSV). The same statements are in Starling's web banking, and business statements sit under the business account.

Does it handle Starling business account statements?keyboard_arrow_down

Yes. The business account uses the same statement layout as a personal account, so the conversion is identical — handy for sole traders and limited companies at year-end.

Will it read a scanned Starling statement?keyboard_arrow_down

Yes, with OCR. A PDF exported straight from the app will convert faster and cleaner than a scan or screenshot.

My statement covers a joint account and my sole account — will they stay separate?keyboard_arrow_down

Yes. If a PDF holds more than one Starling account, each keeps its own opening and closing balance, so the two aren't merged into a single running total.
