Account statement or card statement?
IDBI is one of the banks where the answer depends on which document you are holding. An account statement opens with the Customer ID alone — no date, no name, just the number IDBI assigned when the relationship was opened. A credit-card statement follows the name-plus-date pattern instead: the first four letters of your registered name in capitals, then the day and month of birth.
Applying the account rule to a card statement, or the other way round, accounts for most of the failures people report. Check the first page: an account statement carries your account number in the header, a card statement carries a masked card number.
The Customer ID is printed on the IDBI passbook and chequebook, and shown in the net banking profile. Its length varies between eight and eleven digits depending on when the account was opened, so an older account having a shorter ID is normal rather than a sign you have the wrong number.
IDBI absorbed the former United Western Bank, and accounts carried across from it hold records created under that bank, including the customer ID assigned there.
IDBI moved from public sector to private ownership under LIC, and the customer ID is unaffected by that — it is the same number it always was. Guides written before the change describe the same format.
Where a statement covers a fixed deposit rather than a savings or current account, it is often issued without protection, so an unprotected IDBI file is not a sign that something is missing.
