Getting the name part right
Union Bank's password is one of the name-plus-date patterns rather than a pure date of birth, and nearly every failure comes from the name rather than the date. What counts is the name exactly as the bank has it registered, not the name you would write on a form today.
If your registered name begins with an initial, that initial is the first character. For a customer recorded as R. Tharamathi the first four characters are RTHA, not THAR — people who skip the initial get locked out and conclude the format is wrong. Spaces, full stops and other punctuation are dropped entirely; only letters count.
The letters go in capitals and the year is not used at all. A customer born on 1 June 1990 uses 0106, never 01061990 and never 010690. If your first name is shorter than four letters, the pattern continues into the next name — so a customer named Anu Thomas gives ANUT.
Because the password cannot be changed, there is no chance that someone reset it. If capitals, the registered spelling and DDMM together still fail, the likely cause is a middle name or an expansion recorded at account opening that you have since stopped using. Your passbook or welcome kit shows the registered form.
Because Union Bank fixes this password and offers no way to change it, there is one useful consequence: nobody else can have altered it either. A file that will not open has not been re-secured by the bank, so if you received it directly from Union Bank the pattern is right and one of the inputs is wrong.
Joint accounts follow the first-named holder. Couples who both bank here often try each other's details in turn without realising the statement only ever answers to the primary name on the account record.
Union Bank absorbed Andhra Bank and Corporation Bank, so a large number of customers hold accounts whose underlying record was created at one of those banks. The registered name that the first four characters come from is the one on that original record, which for older accounts can include an expansion or a middle name dropped long ago.
